Toyota Hilux Gets Mild Hybrid Diesel Powertrain For 2024

Toyota has introduced a mild-hybrid version of the popular Hilux pickup truck for the European market. This new variant, known as the Hilux Hybrid 48V, combines a diesel engine with an electric motor to enhance both power and efficiency1

Key Features:

  1. Mild Hybrid System:

    • The Hilux Hybrid 48V incorporates a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
    • A single electric motor adds an extra 16 horsepower (12 kilowatts) and 48 pound-feet (65 Newton-meters) of torque to the existing turbocharged 2.8-liter diesel four-cylinder engine.
    • The diesel engine alone produces 201 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
  2. Fuel Efficiency:

    • Thanks to the mild hybrid system, the Hilux Hybrid 48V is approximately 5% more efficient at the pump compared to the standard diesel powertrain.
    • An enhanced stop-start system improves driving in heavy traffic, allowing the engine to remain off longer during slow situations.
    • Specific fuel economy figures are not yet available.
  3. Multi-Terrain Select System:

    • The electrified pickup comes equipped with Toyota’s Multi-terrain Select system.
    • Drivers can choose from six driving modes: Dirt, Mud, Rock, Sand, Deep Snow, or Automatic (where the truck decides the best mode).
  4. Waterproofing for Off-Roading:

    • Engineers have waterproofed the electrical components to ensure the Hilux Hybrid 48V lives up to its off-road reputation.
    • The truck can wade through up to 27.5 inches of water.
